What's new in Tally
May 4 – May 9, 2026
The headline this week is Life Events — name the moments that matter (a baby, a job change, paying off the mortgage, college starting) and anchor your scenario overrides to them. Move the event date and every override that’s tied to it moves with you. Plus per-year P&L and Balance Sheet drilldowns, retirement accounts that finally unlock at 59.5 across the whole system, and a pinned-reports strip on the dashboard.
Life Events — anchor your forecast to real moments
A scenario like "Early Retirement" or "Have a Baby" is really a handful of moments — incomes ending, expenses starting, an asset being sold, a debt being paid off. Tally now lets you name those moments as Life Events, attach them to your scenario overrides, and the dates flow through automatically. Move "New Baby" from August 2027 to February 2028 and every override anchored to it slides with it.
- Anchor any date to an event. Start, end, sell, pay off, acquire — every action card with a date can point at a Life Event instead of a hard-coded month, and the forecast tracks the event date.
- Grouped picker when adding overrides — incomes and expenses by Category Group, assets and liabilities by category — so finding the right record in a long list is fast.
- Event chips on every line item. Open the per-year P&L or Balance Sheet and any line that’s driven by a Life Event shows a small colored chip with the event name and month — so you can see exactly why a number changed.
- Override chips on every line item, too. A "Reduce Travel −80%" override no longer silently lowers the number with no visual cue — a tan chip on the row tells you exactly what’s being modified.
Click any forecast year to see the full story
The year-detail panel under the forecast chart now groups income and expenses by Category Group, and assets and liabilities by their category — so the breakdown reads the same way you think about your money. Two new buttons, "View Full P&L" and "View Balance Sheet," open large modals with the entire picture for that single year: per-source detail, full tax breakdown, asset flow table, net-worth-flow summary, and a Year Context panel listing this year’s Life Events and active overrides.
- Income and expense rows show their start and end dates, growth and inflation rates, and any custom monthly distribution — not just an annual lump.
- A new Asset Flow table traces money in and out of each account — sale proceeds, down payments, maturities, debt-payoff sources — instead of letting those moves disappear into the start/end balance delta.
- The Year Context panel lists every Life Event happening this year and every active scenario override, grouped by what they target — so you can read a single year like a story.
Retirement accounts unlock at 59.5 across the whole system
If you were already past 59.5 when your forecast started — or you were a 62-year-old retiree using Tally for the first time — your IRAs and 401(k)s were stuck reading as illiquid for the entire projection. Liquid net worth was understated, your runway age was wrong, and the dashboard, balance sheet report, and net-worth history all under-reported what you could actually spend. Fixed everywhere at once.
- The forecast engine now flips retirement assets to liquid in every year past 59.5, not just the year you cross the threshold — so users who start past 59.5 get correctly liquid retirement balances from year one.
- The dashboard, the balance sheet report, and the net-worth history chart all read the rule from the same single source of truth — your liquid net worth is the same number in every place it appears.
- Adding a new retirement-type asset now defaults its Liquid toggle to ON if you’re past 59.5 and OFF otherwise, matching the rule the rest of the system applies.
Pin your favorite reports to the dashboard
A new "Quick Reports" strip on the dashboard lets you pin up to four reports you reach for often. Drag to reorder, swap any of them in or out from a picker, and your selection persists across devices. The same registry powers the Reports landing page, so there’s one source of truth for what reports exist.
- Up to four pinned reports, one click each from the dashboard — no more hunting through the Reports page for the one you actually use.
- Drag-to-reorder the picker, and your selection saves to your account so it follows you between devices.
- Quick Reports sits below your top KPI cards so the dashboard leads with your numbers and tucks navigation right where your eye lands next.
Quality-of-life improvements
Smaller upgrades you'll probably notice.
Create accounts inline during CSV import
When the importer can’t match an account name in your file to one Tally already knows about, you can now pick "+ Create new account" right inside the Map Accounts step. A tiny inline form takes a name and account type, creates the underlying asset or liability automatically, and applies it to the rows you just imported — no leaving the flow, no second pass.
AI categories now apply to SnapTrade and CSV imports too
Plaid and Tiller imports already auto-applied the AI category suggestion (with the green "AUTO" tag) so the row showed a sensible category from the moment it arrived. SnapTrade and CSV imports were inconsistent — they generated a suggestion but didn’t apply it, leaving the row blank and stuck under the Uncategorized filter. Now all four import paths behave the same way: best-guess applied, ready for you to confirm.
Mobile pass across reports, budget, transactions, settings
Every page that didn’t already cleanly resize on a phone got a responsive treatment: Reports, Budget, Transactions, Category Mapping, Transaction Rules, Tickets, Billing, Costs, and the Advisor. The transactions table even switches to a card-per-row layout under 768px. Wide tables can no longer push the body wider than the viewport.
"Planning to Buy" assets stay off the balance sheet until you buy them
A future-purchase asset (like a vacation home you plan to buy in 2032) was being shown on the forecast balance sheet starting today, with its full value baked in. Now it stays at zero until the acquisition month you set, and only then does it appear on the balance sheet — matching how the cash outflow is modeled.
New "Question" feedback type
When you submit feedback you can now pick Question alongside Bug and Feature, so a "how do I…" doesn’t have to masquerade as a bug report. The admin board, email notifications, and the public board all show the new type.
Get in touch →"To Review" deep-link clears stale filters
Clicking the dashboard’s "To Review" card or the post-import "Review them now" button now wipes any saved year, category, account, or text filters before opening the transactions page — so the unreviewed list shows everything that’s actually waiting for you, not a subset filtered down to nothing.
Edit Transaction modal: every connected account in the dropdown
The Account dropdown was only showing accounts that already had at least one transaction. A brand-new credit card with zero activity was silently missing, so you couldn’t hand-assign a row to it. Now every connected account is in the list.
SnapTrade: classify retirement accounts by name when the broker hides the type
Some brokers (Fidelity, especially) report every account as a generic "Brokerage" regardless of whether it’s a 401(k), 403(b), or IRA. Tally now reads the account name and reclassifies it correctly — so the 59.5 liquidity rule and the proper tax treatment actually apply.
Fixes
Small things that were wrong. Now they're right.
- Forecast: an "End at year X" scenario override (with no end month) was silently keeping the income / expense / liability active forever. Fixed.
- Forecast: a payoff event in the same year as the liability’s end no longer double-counts a year-end balloon on top of the explicit payoff.
- Forecast: amortizing liabilities now keep the balance you saved instead of getting recomputed from origination — so extra principal payments, recasts, and pre-Tally history are preserved.
- Forecast: per-asset breakdown now shows event-driven flows (sale proceeds in, down payments out, maturities, payoff sources) instead of letting them disappear into the start/end balance delta.
- Forecast: a fresh deploy now flushes cached forecasts at boot so a logic fix shows up immediately instead of waiting an hour for the cache to expire.
- Forecast: budget reseed-from-forecast now respects partial-year income/expense shapes instead of smearing the annual amount evenly across 12 months.
- Scenarios: opening an asset edit modal inside a scenario no longer crashes the page.
- Scenarios: the override modal no longer loses event-anchored start/end dates when you re-open it to edit.
- Scenarios: Start/End/Pay Off action cards now save both the year and the month, so the forecast doesn’t fall back to whichever month sat on the underlying record.
- Income / Expense / Liability: the end-date "Clear" button now actually clears (was crashing under certain mode switches).
- Transactions: when you manually re-categorize a row that was first auto-categorized by a rule, the "applied by rule" lightning-bolt indicator now goes away — it shouldn’t claim credit for your edit.
- CSV Import: re-importing a file no longer re-creates rows that were already imported. (A previous duplicate-hash format change had broken legacy detection.)
- CSV Import: mapping a category named "Salary" no longer creates a duplicate EXPENSE-typed copy of an existing INCOME category. Sign-flipped expenses on re-import are also fixed.
- CSV Import: the file picker is now a branded button that matches the rest of the app instead of the browser’s default file input.
- Subscription / Billing: post-checkout polling no longer gets killed before it can confirm the new plan.
- Subscription / Billing: an INCOMPLETE or PAST_DUE subscription no longer causes a redirect loop on the Billing page — the Manage Billing CTA always works.
- Subscription / Billing: no more brief "no plans available" flash on the Billing page during initial load.
