What's new in Tally

April 19 – April 25, 2026

The headline this week is a brand-new onboarding experience — Tally now walks you through your plan one record at a time, with a live forecast updating alongside the conversation. Plus self-updating crypto / TSP / real-estate assets, a Transaction Rules engine, and a much smarter AI advisor.

A new onboarding that builds your plan with you

The legacy two-step setup is gone. In its place: a Welcome screen that hands off to a split-pane workspace where the AI walks you through income, housing, retirement, expenses, and a starter budget — explaining where each record lives in the app as it goes.

  • A live runway chart on the right updates after every record. Even before you have real data, Tally synthesizes a hypothetical trajectory from your income and expenses so the chart still moves with each entry — and turns red when it dips below zero.
  • Bank, brokerage, and Tiller connections are offered inside the onboarding, not as a detour. Connecting succeeds without dumping you on the transactions page mid-setup.
  • Progress is persisted at every step. Refresh the page, log out, or come back tomorrow — you pick up exactly where you left off.
  • The assistant teaches as it goes. When it adds your mortgage, it tells you it lives under Liabilities → Real Estate, so you know where to find it later.

Assets that keep their own balances current

Three asset types — cryptocurrency wallets, Thrift Savings Plan accounts, and real estate — now update their values automatically. No more typing in today’s BTC price or guessing what your house is worth.

Crypto wallets

Paste a BTC address (or xpub / ypub / zpub) or an ETH address and Tally values the wallet automatically. On-chain balances + live coin prices, refreshed every morning.

TSP accounts

Enter your shares per fund. Tally pulls today's share prices straight from tsp.gov, totals the value live in the form, and refreshes nightly so your federal-government balance is never stale.

Homes, rentals & land

AI market research pulls Zillow- and Redfin-style estimates (or comp sales when those are missing) for any real-estate asset. A persistent +$ or +% modifier lets you capture remodels and upgrades the market can't see — it reapplies on every refresh.

New feature

Transaction Rules — your categorizations, on autopilot

Write a rule once and Tally applies it to every imported transaction that matches — before the existing AI categorization tiers ever run. Match by description, imported category, amount, account, source, or note, and chain actions together.

  • Composite actions — a single rule can set the category, rename the description, append a note, exclude the transaction, or split it across multiple categories.
  • Matched transactions are auto-reviewed, so they skip the review queue entirely — and a small zap badge in the list shows which rule fired.
  • First-match-wins, so you can stack a few specific rules above a broad catch-all and the order behaves the way you’d expect.

Improved

A much sharper AI Advisor — and a chat that can do more

The Advisor was overhauled top-to-bottom. The chat assistant picked up a pile of new tools at the same time, so you can manage transactions and clean up records right from the chat sidebar.

  • The Advisor now classifies your runway as planned surplus, planned drawdown, or genuine risk — so it stops treating an intentional retirement drawdown as an emergency.
  • Advice is now context-rich: year-to-date budget pacing, your active scenario and overrides, the trajectory shape of your forecast, your Events, and your liability payment strategies are all in scope.
  • Interactive follow-ups — after the initial analysis, you can ask the Advisor a follow-up question and it has read-only access to your data to answer specifics.
  • The chat assistant can now list and edit transactions, bulk recategorize, mark batches reviewed, and delete records — with a preview card before any change is saved.
  • A "View in Transactions" deep link inside chat results pre-filters the transactions page so you can drill into the same set the AI just showed you.

Quality-of-life improvements

Smaller upgrades you’ll probably notice.

Asset performance, computed on demand

The old "Month-End Close" ritual is gone. Real growth for any account, asset, or your full portfolio is now computed live with a time-weighted return — contributions and withdrawals are stripped out automatically, so a big paycheck no longer looks like investment performance.

Dashboard shows today's real net worth

The Net Worth and Liquid Net Worth tiles now read from your live asset and liability balances, not the end-of-year forecast projection. The month-over-month delta compares against your last actual snapshot too.

Plaid investment income gets AI categories

Investment-account dividends, interest, and fees used to land in your review queue with no AI suggestion. Now they're categorized on import like every other transaction — so your Vanguard dividends stop sitting blank.

Home: clearer budget pulse cards

Each budget pulse card on the dashboard now labels its two columns "Actual" and "Budget" — no more guessing which side is which. The cards have been reordered to put the most actionable ones first.

Future-purchase assets stay out of today's net worth

A planned home or future investment property no longer inflates your current net worth or primary-residence equity — it shows up only when its acquisition date arrives.

Bug fixes

Fixes

Small things that were wrong. Now they’re right.

  • Transaction Rules now match descriptions with collapsed whitespace, so "FDIC INSURED BANK DEPOSITS" matches a needle of "fdic insured bank d".
  • SnapTrade brokerage balances no longer double-count money-market positions.
  • Crypto valuation lookups switched to a more reliable Ethereum RPC (no more rate-limit failures on ETH wallet lookups).
  • Crypto-asset holdings render correctly on the asset detail page (was crashing on a Decimal/number type mismatch).
  • Property-valuation Balance History now updates when you change your $ or % modifier — no more stale historical entries.
  • Adding a mortgage or auto loan via chat with a future start date now correctly marks the home or vehicle as a future purchase, not already-owned.
  • The chat's "Add Category" approval card now shows human names for groups, assets, and linked categories instead of internal IDs.

Try the new onboarding — even if you’re an existing user

The fastest way to feel the difference: open the AI chat from any page and ask it to add a Crypto wallet or your TSP. Watch your forecast move in real time as Tally fills in the values for you.
