Plan as a household, not just a person

Share your financial picture with a partner or family member. Income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and the forecast now all understand that there can be more than one person under one plan.

  • Invite family members by email — they create their own login but share the same financial data.
  • The lifetime forecast now models multi-member runway, accounting for each member's age, income, and life expectancy.
  • Changes made by any household member flow through to everyone's view instantly.

New feature

Envelope budgeting with rollover

Unspent budget no longer evaporates at month-end. Each category can now carry its balance forward — so a frugal month actually rewards you the next month.

  • Turn rollover on per category — you decide which budgets behave like envelopes and which reset monthly.
  • Overspend in one month and you'll start the next month in the hole, so the math stays honest.
  • Budget lines are now strictly 1:1 with categories per budget, which removes a whole class of duplicate-line bugs.
March envelopes
Groceries$612 / $800
+$188 rolling to April
Dining Out$418 / $300
−$118 rolling to April
Gas & Fuel$164 / $220
+$56 rolling to April
Improved

Smarter Plaid imports

We tuned the categorization pipeline so more transactions land in the right bucket on the first try — and fewer get flagged as mysterious transfers.

Credit card income = transfer

Refunds, cashback, and statement credits on credit cards no longer show up as income on your P&L — they're now treated as transfers.

Tighter description history

Auto-categorization is now stricter about matching past transactions, so one-off merchants don't accidentally train the wrong category.

Accounts disambiguated by ID

If two of your banks gave accounts the same name (e.g. two "Checking" accounts), Tally now keeps them straight behind the scenes.

Security

Safer sessions, safer billing

Four changes under the hood that make your account harder to compromise and your subscription state harder to get wrong.

Auth moved to secure cookies

Your session is now stored in an httpOnly cookie instead of browser localStorage. This blocks an entire class of XSS-based token theft attacks.

Trial expirations enforced end-to-end

Every protected API route now checks trial status, so billing state can't drift between the frontend and backend.

Admin login consent

Admin "log in as user" sessions now require explicit user-level permission — you control whether support can assume your session.

Version mismatch protection

The API and the app now agree on which deploy they're on. Mismatches trigger a reload so you're never running half-old, half-new code.

Polish

Quality-of-life improvements

The changes you'll probably notice first.

Accounts hidden — assets & liabilities front and center

The old "Accounts" page is gone. Everywhere you used to see a raw bank account name, you now see the asset or liability it represents. "Needs info" badges are retired.

Getting Started guide rewritten

A new detailed, step-by-step walkthrough covering sign-up, connections, categorization, forecast, and scenarios.

Better feedback board filters

The public feedback board now has the same dropdown filters (type, status, priority, sort) as the admin view.

Field-specific form validation

Forms that used to fail silently now highlight the exact field that needs attention with a clear error message.

Auto-reload on new versions

When we ship a new deploy while you're in the app, you'll see a gentle banner prompting a refresh so you always run the latest code.

Budget reports work for past years

Pulling a Budget vs. Actuals report for a prior year no longer errors out.

Household invitations by email

When you invite a family member to your household, they now get a proper invitation email.

Bug fixes

Fixes

Small things that were wrong. Now they're right.

  • Stale bank-connection warning now clears after you reconnect.
  • Asset update failures and the duplicate "Uncategorized" filter chip are resolved.
  • Plaid reconnect no longer asks for investment scope when it doesn't need to.
  • The "Review Categories" setup task now clears as soon as you visit the page.
  • Checks (paper checks with a check number) are always classified as expenses, not transfers.
  • Zelle and Venmo P2P payments now count as expenses rather than internal transfers.
  • Malformed Google sign-ins return a clean 401 instead of a confusing 500.

Jump back into Tally

All of these updates are already live in your account. No action required — except maybe inviting your partner to join your new household.
